Population of Sydney

Sydney is not only the capital of Australia but it is also the most populous city of Australia. The metropolitan area of Sydney city houses almost 4.28 million people. Sydney was the first European colony in Australia and it was established by Sir Aurther Phillip in the year 1788 on Sydney Cove. Population of Sydney is a mixed one with a resident of the city of Sydney colloquially referred as Sydneysider.

If we make a discussion on the density of population of Sydney we would find out that Inner Sydney is the most densely populated area in Sydney with 4023 persons per square kilometer. Sydney statistical division area of Sydney is a bigger area than the urban area of Sydney as it has more predicted growth. If we try to analyze the ancestral origin of the population of Sydney we would find out that most of the population of Sydney is either have English, Irish or Chinese or Australian origin. Only one percent of the population of Sydney had indigenous origin or is aboriginal Australian.



A recent census of the population of Sydney has also revealed nearly 31.7% of the population of Sydney was born overseas. Major part immigrant population of Sydney has mainly immigrated from England, China or New Zealand. However considerable number of immigrants also came from Vietnam, Lebanon, Italy, India and the Philippines. As a result it becomes difficult to simplistically identify the religious affinity of the population of Sydney. The census of 2006 reveals that 29.1% of the Sydney population are Catholics, 17.9% are Anglican Christians , 17.0% as members of other Christian denominations, 3.7% are Buddhists, 3.9% are Muslims, 1.7% as Hindus, 0.9% as Jews and 14.1% as having no religion.

As far as the language spoken by the population of Sydney goes the majority of the residents of Sydney are English speaking however many Sydneysiders speak a second native language the most common being Arabic and Chinese languages and Greek. Sydney is a city which has the rare honor of having the seventh largest multicultural and foreign born population in the world and in this respect it leaves behind Cosmopolitan cities like London and Paris behind it.
