The history of Sydney doesn't merely refer to the cultural heritage of the European settlers in the city. Aboriginal heritage is an important part of the whole of Sydney heritage. Indigenous heritage places hold great value and create strong links between the people and the land. Hence a comprehensive discourse about history of Sydney would be incomplete without an account of the aboriginal people of Australia who are believed to have inhabited the region for at least 40,000 years. The principle language spoken by these indigenous inhabitants were Durang,Dharawal and Guringai.
Europeans became interest in settling a colony in the Sydney region of Australia after Captain James Cook landed in Botany Bay in the year 1170. On the instruction of the British government Arthur Phillip established that convict settlement in Sydney Cove on Port Jackson in 1788 which has through the passage of years has transformed itself into the modern city of Sydney. During 1796 Macquarie's tenure as Governor of New South Wales was a time which is considered to be a important epoch in the history of Sydney. During the Maccquaire’s tenure Sydney was improved from its basic beginnings. A plethora of Roads, bridges, wharves and public buildings were constructed by British and Irish convicts during this period. By the year 1822 the town had markets, wide and well connected thoroughfares banks and an organized constabulary.
The history of Rapid suburban development of Sydney also followed in the last quarter of the 19th century with the advent of steam powered tramway and railways. With industrialization Sydney expanded manifold within a few years and by the early 20th century Sydney had a population well in excess of one million. The Great Depression is one of the darkest periods in the history of Sydney when the economy of Sydney took a bad beating. One of the redeeming factors of the Depression era, however, was the completion of the Sydney Harbor Bridge in 1932.Throughout the entire 20th century Sydney continued to expand with various new waves of European and (later) Asian immigration and this resulted in its highly cosmopolitan and multiracial atmosphere unique to Sydney.
