The Elizabeth Bay House was constructed between the year 1835 and 1839. The credit for the wonderful design of this historical building goes to the architect John Verge. It was constructed for Alexander Macleay who was the Colonial Secretary. At the Elizabeth Bay House you would be able to get a very good idea of the lifestyle maintained by the Macleays. In fact the house is the perfect place for the tourists to understand the 19th century lifestyle which existed in the city of Sydney. In the earlier days the Elizabeth Bay House was surrounded by a wonderful garden which was spread over an area of 54 acres. The garden was aptly labeled as the botanist’s paradise. The credit for the construction of this amazing garden should be given to Alexander Macleay.



Alexander Macleay had a very keen and learned interest in botany and this got reflected in his idea of the beautiful garden. Macleay even had a wonderful library built in the Elizabeth Bay House and his collection of entomology was simply awesome. The Elizabeth Bay House remains closed on Mondays except during the public holidays. It remains closed for visitors on Christmas day and on the occasion of Good Friday. The timings of the place are from 10 am till 4:30 pm in the evening.

When you visit the Elizabeth Bay House in Sydney Australia you would have to pay an entrance fees. The rate varies for the adults and the children. You could also avail of the group booking facilities which are provided there. Facilities are also provided for the physically challenged and hence visiting the Elizabeth Bay House should not be a problem for any tourist.
